We had a storm today while we were recording the Hymn of Comfort. It was so powerful and beautiful and terrible all at the same time. This is Holy Week, and we have a lot to reflect on the powerful, beautiful and terrible reality of what Christ endured. Wren’s Hymn of Comfort is When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, and she wrote the second part. I’m also including a video of the storm so you can see what we were watching while she played!

These past few days have been spectacular! A doxology seems appropriate for today – Here is Wren’s hymn of comfort for today. Also, scroll to the bottom to hear Creation’s doxology…
Walks with Wren and Rick while birding and talking help me focus on the good parts of our current situation! I love Wendell Berry. Knowing and spending time in the same place is very important to him. His poetry demonstrates his understanding of place (his home).

In this poem, he’s inviting us to know about the place where we live. This opportunity is giving some of us the opportunity to be home- in the same place – much more than we might choose. I’m trying to notice new things, and things that change in this little one acre place I call home. I am thankful that I can also expand my understanding of place beyond my 1-acre yard so that I can visit forest preserves as well. Here are some of my favorite sightings over the weekend – many from out my sunroom window!

We went for a lovely sunset walk. All of creation was singing tonight! We were reminded just how Deep the Father’s Love is for us!
Here are some highlights from the walk.

When I see the amazingly beautiful creatures that our Creator made and takes joy in, I know His love for me is deep! Today I was able to go for a long photography walk in a Forest Preserve. I went right after the rain stopped, and no one was around for the first hour I was there. It was just what I needed. To be outside. The birdsong chorus was amazing, and restorative. Here is some of what I saw…

Wren’s hymn of comfort today is one of our favorites. We decided to try our hand at editing a side-by-side video so she could play two parts.
Wren picked Amazing Grace for Wren’s Hymn of Comfort Today.
We might be at home, distanced from our friends and family, but God sends us reminders of his faithfulness (Amazing Grace). Today we were blessed with blue skies and flocks and flocks of cranes. When I looked at the pictures on my computer, I was delighted to see that there were Whooping Cranes mixed in the groups! This is a life species for me (some people actually keep a written list, I just keep a running list in my head (and bird book)). Whooping cranes are endangered, so it’s even more special to see them. I always scan groups of cranes hoping to see one or two, but I’ve never seen one until today… and there were several in this group. Sandhill cranes do not have black wing tips…whooping cranes do! Here are some photos:

It’s kind of hard to tell with the silhouette, but I think these are all sandhill cranes

I love to read. I read books, of course, but I also read landscapes. As an ecologist, I am always considering the ecology of the places I go. Ecology requires an understanding of relationships and how these relationships impact the development of communities and ecosystems. Each place has an ecological story – a story of the non-living forces that acted to create soil, how seeds found their way to those small patches of soil, how the plants grew, changed the light reaching the soil and how the types of plants and animals changed over time.
